If you're in the mood for a warm, cozy film to watch this weekend, why not check out Hotarubi No Mori (Hotaru's Forest)? Full movie here. It's based on the manga series of the same name, which tells an interesting coming-of-age story about a student named Hotaru who goes to live with her aunt in the forests of Japan. Along with her aunt and two other girls, one who lives nearby and another that she meets through her aunt's school connections, Hotaru learns how to use tools like spears and long knives. The girls also engage in some survival skills like tracking animals. Naturally, this leads to some comedy, but the most interesting part of this movie is its focus on community. A lot of it revolves around Hotaru, but her friends are also very important characters. Without them, the movie wouldn't have been as great as it was. Yes, there were some plot holes in Hotaru no Mori e, but I'll overlook them since I really liked the movie. As for the DVD itself? The packaging is very simple and not creative at all. There are several versions of this DVD out now--the Angelic Edition and the Animate Deluxe Edition are packaged differently from each other and from this one. You can see pictures below of how each version looks like. This one comes packaged in a thin DVD case with illustrations on the front and back. The back covers information about the movie's characters and story, but not much else. The movie comes with two audio tracks, both of which are English. One is dubbed in English and the other is dubbed in Japanese. The English dub sounds pretty good to my ears. It has actors who seem to be familiar with saying lines in English so that's always good. The Japanese dub sounds just fine as well, but it doesn't have any familiar voices for me to recognize. There are no subtitles for this DVD, but there is an English language track which you can turn on to read translations if you want. The disc also contains trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases like Toradora and The Comic Artist and His Assistants, along with a promo video for their Summer 2013 line-up. One of the things I always look forward to in Sentai Filmworks DVDs is the commentary track. This one has two: one by the English dub's voice actors and another by the Japanese voice actors. I'm especially glad that they didn't just use this as an excuse to promote their own work since they actually talk about Hotarubi No Mori e instead. The English dub is a little more upbeat than the Japanese version, so it's a little difficult to listen to both. I'd recommend listening to the English track first so you can hear them going over different lines with each other. While there are a few plot holes in this movie, overall it's very enjoyable and super-cute too. You can check out my full review of Hotarubi No Mori e here. Hotarubi no Mori e won the Best Children's Television Program at the 26th Annual Kodansha Manga Award Ceremony in 2011. It was also nominated for Best TV Anime Series for 2011 at the 39th Japan Academy Prize Awards .
